    Application & Portfolio Review

    Before any interview:
    • We review the candidate’s:
      • Resume
      • Portfolio of work (photos or examples)
      • References
     
    We screen for:
    • Relevant professional shop experience
    • Quality of craftsmanship
    • Variety and complexity of past projects
    • Stability and professionalism in work history
     
    Only qualified candidates move to Stage 2.
    • Step 2

    Initial Interview (Phone or Zoom)

    Purpose:
    Quickly determine if the candidate is worth bringing into the shop.

     
    Format:
    • 20–30 minute phone or Zoom call
     
    We evaluate:
    • Communication skills and professionalism
    • Work history and experience level
    • Problem-solving mindset
    • Attitude toward fast-paced, custom work
    • Expectations around pay, schedule, and role
    • Overall personality and values fit

     

    Outcome:
    • If it’s a strong mutual fit → Invite to in-person interview
    • If not → Politely decline and close the file
    • Step 3

    In-Person Interview + Shop Tour

    Purpose:
    Confirm real-world fit for both sides.

     
    Format:
    • In-person interview at the shop
    • Full tour of the workspace, equipment, and current projects

     
    We evaluate:
    • How they react to the shop environment
    • Their understanding of the type of work we do
    • Their attention to detail and curiosity
    • Their questions, engagement, and attitude
    • Deeper technical discussion of their past projects and methods

     
    We also show them:
    • The pace and complexity of our builds
    • The standards we hold for quality and organization
    • The expectations for teamwork, accountability, and performance

     
    Outcome:
    • If both sides feel confident → Conditional offer pending probation
    • If not → No hire
    • Step 4

    Offer & Probationary Period

    All hires start with a probationary period.

    Purpose:
    To verify that:
    • Skill level matches what was claimed
    • Work quality meets Wooden Hearts standards
    • The person fits the team culture
    • They can handle:
      • Fast-paced builds
      • Changing scopes
      • Problem solving
      • Shop discipline and workflow
     
    During probation we closely monitor:
    • Work quality & consistency
    • Speed and efficiency
    • Attitude and coachability
    • Reliability and punctuality
    • Communication and teamwork
    • Cleanliness and organization
    • Safety and tool handling
     
    Checkpoints:
    • Informal weekly check-ins
    • Formal review at end of probation period
     
    Outcomes:
    ✅ Pass → Full-time permanent position
    ⚠️ Concerns → Extend probation or corrective plan
    ❌ Fail → Employment ends
